Insomnia, I Presume?

You lie in bed, staring at your blank ceiling. It’s around 2:00 am, and you still can’t catch some of those precious Zs. Is there anything bothering you? Are your thoughts so aggravating, you just can’t keep still?

During such a situation, it might be better to accept your restlessness and, in the meantime, spend your energy on something else. Sometimes, you just can’t force yourself to shut down and sleep.

10. Have Yourself a Midnight Snack

Midnight Snack
Milk and cookies
The tossing and turning doesn’t always have to be on the bed. Maybe you could prepare a small tossed salad with some creamy dressing on the side, or you could take a trip to the nearby 24-hour deli for a delicious sandwich.

The midnight snack doesn’t have to be a hefty meal. In fact, it could just be a drink, like a glass of milk. If it’s nice and warm, chances are you’ll fall asleep in no time. However, you shouldn’t prepare a cup of coffee or tea or anything that has caffeine, unless of course you want to stay awake.

9. Play Video Games

Your mind might be preoccupied, resulting in your inability to get some sleep. Plug in your Xbox 360, your Nintendo Wii, or even your old Atari and choose a game that doesn’t require much thinking. Be sure, though, to pick a video game that’s not too addictive. Remember, the point is to do something that gets you sleepy and not to keep you mindlessly awake.

8. Read a Book

Just like with video games, a book could be the distraction needed from whatever it is that’s keeping you up. A troubled mind needs some solace that a book might be able to offer.

The key here, though, is to find something that’s engaging enough to be enjoyable without totally engulfing you with interest. What works is a book that’s both easy to pick up and put down.

Still, you might need a really boring book to put your night away. If at first, you find the book really taxing, keep at it. Again, the whole point is to give your mind a reason to stop working. And to aid your quest to dreamland are the greatest fantasy novels ever. Just be ready to wake up with a heavy book on your face or chest.

7. Listen to Music

Tuning to my station
Some mood lighting and a good song can always relax the mind. A good night’s sleep is at hand when some soft and soothing music is played in the background. Some slow jazz or ballads might do the trick of calming you down for the night.

If you’re not too sure what you should be playing, head on to the record store. You might find a CD made just for the purpose of getting the user relaxed and sleepy. Some tracks on some albums may actually incorporate sounds from nature. A constant breeze or the subtle crashing of the waves on the beach, after all, is the perfect backdrop for dreaming.

6. Watch Videos or DVDs

In your waking hours, you may have bought yourself a bunch of DVDs. Work hasn’t been too easy on you, so you haven’t had the chance to watch all of them.

If you’re wide awake late at night, it’s a great chance to prepare some popcorn, dim the lights a bit, and start your midnight movie marathon. Nothing beats copies of the most amazing blockbuster movies. Be sure to keep the volume at bay, though, since you might wake your neighbors. A group of irate neighbors isn’t exactly a nice thing to sleep on.

5. Go for a Walk

Tire yourself
Some sweating might just help your restlessness wear off. Put on warm clothes and take a walk around the neighborhood. A good 30-minute stroll might be enough time to clear your head. You might even run into a fellow insomniac.

However, you wouldn’t want to get yourself overly pumped. After all, too fast a blood rush is as much of an upper as two shots of espresso. Take your time. A slow pace will always slow down the body enough for sleepy time.

4. Drive Around

Drive
Hit the night
If you’re feeling a bit antsier, maybe a short drive around town could help you relax. Given that most people are already in their beds, the roads are clear enough for you to drive with a little less caution.

Driving around late at night gives you the chance to see your neighborhood literally under a different light. You might find it peaceful and serene. Likewise, you might have a new-found appreciation for your neighborhood.

Keep tabs on your gas levels, though. Remember, you’re out driving just because you want to get to sleep. Don’t get carried away and end up far from your home.

3. Tidy up Your House/Apartment

Sometimes, menial work can be therapeutic. Repetitive and mindless movement has the tendency to keep your mind off of the things that keep you awake. If you can’t fall asleep, now is the time to organize your desk, clean out your closet and dust every nook and cranny of your room.

Since you’re up late anyway, you could do the tidying up you’ve been meaning to do, but were always too preoccupied to actually go about finishing. After all, none of your office problems are going to plague you at this time of night, right?

2. Find Somebody Else Who’s Awake

Chatting with my brother
Some company or even a nice, friendly conversation is all you need to prepare your mind for sleep. Check online, or give some of your friends a call. You might be surprised at how many others are up, sharing your dilemma. Don’t be afraid to reach out.

1. Ponder the Lessons of the Day

By the look of things, your fidgety disposition could be because something is bothering you. The quiet and stillness of the night could sometimes be the apt setting for some serious reflection and soul-searching.

All you probably need to do is lie still in your bed and sort out all the thoughts running through your head. Give it some time. You might clarify some things soon enough for you to get that much-needed good night’s rest.

Go With the Flow

There is a lot more to do when you find yourself wide awake late at night. The key here is to let your body take the lead. For whatever reason, your body might have seen it fit to be up that late. Just go with the flow. Eventually, you will tire out and get the rest you’ve been looking for.
