This film criticizes the education system, deference to authority and sociocultural stereotypes abound in Singaporean society. The main character, Terry Khoo, has a strict mother and a very affluent and business-oriented father. However, he can’t seem to move past EM3, the section for students classsified as the lowest in academics. The story revolves around two other EM3 students, Ang Boon Hock and Liu Kok Pin. Both have their own stories too, with their parents comparing children and forcing them to do well with academic subjects.
Top 9: Happy Ghost
Raymond Wong plays a ghost who traverses from the Ching dynasty to present times. He is unlike the typical Chinese ghost who is revengeful. As his name suggests, he brings smiles to everyone around him and helps them get out of trouble. He also has a mischievous side as he likes to play practical jokes on people of authority. All throughout the movie, the Happy Ghost is threatened, especially when the school head takes hold of the rope, which represents the ghost’s life. Wong is then reincarnated in the end. This film was followed by more swashbuckling sequels.
Top 8: Love on a Diet
Mini-Mo, played by actress Sammi Cheng, is a girl who forgot herself when love closed its doors on her. Her love Kurokawa, played by Japanese actor Rikiya Kurokawa, left to study music as a pianist in the US. She then had food as her companion. Before she knew it, she ballooned uncontrollably and suffered from depression.
When Kurokawa returned, he confessed that he still loved Mini. Enter Andy Lau, who plays Fatty or Fatso. He becomes Mini’s friend and promised to help her become slim before the two lovers meet again. All these made them all the more closer to each other.
The big comedic attraction of this movie is seeing actors Sammi Cheng and Andy Lau in massive fat suits. With the makeup and professional prosthetics, they look convincingly overweight. This “gigantic and heavy” movie did very well at the box office as well.

Stephen Chow once again invades the silver screen with this box office comedy flick. He calls himself “Sik San”, an arrogant restaurant owner who uses his skills to up the sales of unknown restaurants . He mets ugly Sister Turkey, played by Karen Mok, who helps him launch his own small business, selling pissing beef balls. He then goes to China to learn more about cooking in order to challenge his rivals. This film also stars Ng Man-Tat and Vincent Kok Tak-Chiu. Although the style of comedy can be cheesy in some scenes because of cultural differences, there is still humor that can cater to the western audience.

Chow Yun-Fat plays a well-known Singaporean gambler. In this 1989 Hong Kong comedy film directed by Wong Jing, Ko falls to the trap of Knife, played by Andy Lau, an Indian servant he can’t stand. Because Ko was struck in the head, he suffers from amnesia and regresses to childhood. Knife took him and named him Chocolate. When he discovers Ko’s talents, he exploited his talents for gambling. Weaving through this battle is the loudmouthed loser in the slum areas, played by Chow, who finds himself having to fulfill his bragging. All the elements go together and make an entertaining, funny, and action-filled screen experience for everyone.

Can love conquer bad odor? This is the main recurring problem in this story of whether the heart of the character of Richie Ren can or cannot overcome his nose. Fragrant, played by Miriam Yeung, is a princess infected with such bad body odor that even her family faints at just a mere sniff of her. Sing, the main character, is played by Stephen Chow in this 2001 Hong Kong comedy film. He reunited the four brothers to form the soccer team coached by a former soccer player, Fung. They are up against Team Evil, which is coached by Fung’s enemy, Hung. When playing soccer, the five brothers are like explosive weapons as each has his own special ability.
