Working with my computer
We all know that computer hardware consists of the physical components of a computer. Over the years, several hardware breakthroughs have paved way for the development of computer technology. Without these evolutionary PC components, computers wouldn’t be as user-friendly and convenient to use. Let’s take a look at the different hardware components that have been milestones in the computer industry.
6 pin FireWire 400 connector
FireWire is a peripheral connection port, originally patented by Apple computers. Later on, though, other brands were also able to acquire rights to include the technology in their units, making FireWire more of a generic name. This type of connection is not limited to computers today. Since 1995, most new models of camcorders have had built-in FireWire capability, which allows easy connection of these devices to any enabled PC unit. Such a feature is useful to those who like to edit their videos since FireWire allows ultra fast transfer speed, sometimes even faster than USB 2.0.
9. Floppy Disk
Floppy Disk Drive
If you’re wondering why such an obsolete hardware is included on our list, remember that this is about hardware breakthroughs, not modern technology. Indeed, floppy disks are among the most successful hardware pieces that have led us to where we are now in as far as removable media disks are concerned. Despite their limited storage capacity, floppy disks inspired the creation of the more advanced storage hardware we enjoy today, like CD-ROM and flash drives.
8. Image Scanner
Scanning the Green Dino
It is not the digitization of images, per se, that qualifies image scanners as breakthrough hardware; instead, what makes this hardware special is that it has the capacity to turn what is physical and tangible into something digital and transferable over phone lines. Aside from making it possible for old photo prints to be preserved and enhanced, image scanners also serve as the benchmark for the future digitization of other items we now enjoy in their analog forms. (Tips on how to use a scanner
The CD Rom
CD-ROMs were initially introduced as a reader for audio compilations on a compact disc. You may be aware that ROM means read only memory, so CD-ROM does not technically include the more modern two-in-one drives today that can both read and write contents. Even if this is so, the addition of CD-ROM signalled the computer’s embrace of multimedia functions. Of course, we know that later on, CD-ROM also allowed us to watch videos, play games, and access larger files of various types all storable on CDs.
An old Axis 2100 network camera
Everyone knows that web cameras are among the top hardware breakthroughs of our time since they provide the cheapest and most advanced form of distant communication. All you need is an Internet connection and a microphone and you can virtually talk to your loved one personally through real-time video. E-mail and instant messaging may become obsolete in no time when a more efficient text exchange system is developed, but the services offered by webcams are likely to last longer.
If FireWire is on our list, then we can’t miss the Universal Serial Bus, more commonly known as USB. The inventors of the USB had two main objectives. First, they wanted a standardized interface on different digital gadgets so that they could be connected to a PC. Indeed, digital cameras, portable gaming consoles, MP3 players, and other gadgets with digital storage can now be connected to computers using USB. The second objective was to improve plug-and play capabilities, which we enjoy now since we can connect and remove gadgets to and from PCs without rebooting them.

4. Solid State Drive
An SSD in standard 2.5-inch
This is a development in computer hardware that can potentially replace the use of hard disk drives. In contrast to HDD, SSD is more robust and works faster. These attributes are based on the fact that solid state drives don’t have any moving parts. Latency is a common problem associated with drives like HDDs since they still have to seek their contents. You get instant access to your files with solid state drives. SSD is also silent and eliminates possible mechanical problems in models with moving parts.
3. Inkjet Printer
The Epson Inkjet Printer
Any ordinary consumer is now able to have a hardcopy of their photos or text materials in full color without spending too much. The affordability of using this technology is furthered by the introduction of ink refill system. The printouts that inkjet printers produce are cost-efficient since their quality is comparable to that produced by a laser printer. Other than the PC essentials, inkjet printers are one of the main output devices that most of us invest in since they are capable of delivering satisfactory results.
A contemporary computer mouse
There are other hardware pieces with the same pointing functions, but the world has become dependent on this input device. Admit it or not, there are some tasks that you cannot execute on a modern computer without the help of a mouse. The real question here actually is if our generation would still be computer literate if mouse suddenly became unavailable? Such breakthrough hardware maximized the potential of icon-based interface since you simply have to click on images and a new command is executed, often opening a new window or starting another program.
writable Volatile Random Access Memory
The number one item can be mistaken as a type of program that allows random access to files that can be saved in different locations. While this function is true, RAM is also a type of hardware, specifically of integrated circuits. With random access memory, data can be retrieved instantly regardless of its order, hence the word “random.” Perhaps it is best to explain the innovation brought about by RAM in contrast to an optical disc or tapes; these less advanced technologies have to wait until the reader head reaches the point where the needed data can be retrieved. You can only imagine how slow our computers would be if they operated on this system.
These hardware devices all deserve to be called “breakthroughs” because they are often the most essential, or most advanced technologies in the world of computers. Their impact is often so great that you can’t imagine your life without them.
