We all know that computer hardware consists of the physical components of a computer. Over the years, several hardware breakthroughs have paved way for the development of computer technology. Without these evolutionary PC components, computers wouldn’t be as user-friendly and convenient to use. Let’s take a look at the different hardware components that have been milestones in the computer industry.

FireWire is a peripheral connection port, originally patented by Apple computers. Later on, though, other brands were also able to acquire rights to include the technology in their units, making FireWire more of a generic name. This type of connection is not limited to computers today. Since 1995, most new models of camcorders have had built-in FireWire capability, which allows easy connection of these devices to any enabled PC unit. Such a feature is useful to those who like to edit their videos since FireWire allows ultra fast transfer speed, sometimes even faster than USB 2.0.

You may be aware that ROM means read only memory, so CD-ROM does not technically include the more modern two-in-one drives today that can both read and write contents. Even if this is so, the addition of CD-ROM signalled the computer’s embrace of multimedia functions. Of course, we know that later on, CD-ROM also allowed us to watch videos, play games, and access larger files of various types all storable on CDs.

Everyone knows that web cameras are among the top hardware breakthroughs of our time since they provide the cheapest and most advanced form of distant communication. All you need is an Internet connection and a microphone and you can virtually talk to your loved one personally through real-time video. E-mail and instant messaging may become obsolete in no time when a more efficient text exchange system is developed, but the services offered by webcams are likely to last longer.

If FireWire is on our list, then we can’t miss the Universal Serial Bus, more commonly known as USB. The inventors of the USB had two main objectives. First, they wanted a standardized interface on different digital gadgets so that they could be connected to a PC. Indeed, digital cameras, portable gaming consoles, MP3 players, and other gadgets with digital storage can now be connected to computers using USB. The second objective was to improve plug-and play capabilities, which we enjoy now since we can connect and remove gadgets to and from PCs without rebooting them.

This is a development in computer hardware that can potentially replace the use of hard disk drives. In contrast to HDD, SSD is more robust and works faster. These attributes are based on the fact that solid state drives don’t have any moving parts. Latency is a common problem associated with drives like HDDs since they still have to seek their contents. You can only imagine how slow our computers would be if they operated on this system.

These hardware devices all deserve to be called “breakthroughs” because they are often the most essential, or most advanced technologies in the world of computers. Their impact is often so great that you can’t imagine your life without them.
