Top Ten Party Themes for Kids

Posted on December 13th, 2007 by

Your precious youngster’s birthday is coming up, and you’re planning on throwing a great birthday party they will love. Although you always have the option of throwing a birthday party sans-theme, wouldn’t it be a lot more fun for your child to get all dressed up and ready to party for his or her big day? Forgo the traditional and boring “cake-slicing-and-gift-giving only” party for something a little more adventurous and a lot more enjoyable for your child.

Everybody loves themed parties. Whether it’s a cowboy-themed party or a party fit for a princess, your child deserves a fabulous birthday party that all the guests (and their parents!) will be raving about for weeks.

The key to finding the right party theme for your child’s birthday lies in basing the theme on your child’s interests. Is your child a Harry Potter fan? Is your young man hooked on a particular superhero? Does your child enjoy treasure hunts or gaming?

If you answered yes to any of the questions above, then you’re in luck. This list can provide you with a fantastic and fun-filled list of top ten party themes for kids.

1. A Day at Hogwarts!

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy may have been a big hit with adults, but more children enjoyed and obsessed over the Harry Potter books, movies and merchandise. A Harry Potter-themed children’s party can be the perfect way to create an excellent concoction of magic and fun. Encourage the children to dress up as their favorite Harry Potter character, and don’t forget to tell the grownups to dress like their Hogwart professor of choice. Serve pumpkin pie and butterbeer, or your non-alcoholic beverage of choice, and present every child with Harry Potter giveaways before they each have to head home.

2. Superheroes vs. Supervillains

Kids go crazy for superheroes, but there are a select few who would rather shift to the dark side and be the supervillain. Encourage the guests to come in their favorite superhero or supervillain costume and gear. Group the kids into several superhero and supervillain teams. If you’re holding the party outdoors, a spacious backyard will allow you to hold a relay race that would determine the “supergroup” of the bunch. Award the child with the most creative costume, and fill the loot bags with gifts any superhero would enjoy, like x-ray glasses and superhero figurines.

3. Swashbuckling Pirates!

“Hello, poppet.” With the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy now an easy favorite flick among kids, why not throw a themed party fit for notorious pirates? Ask your guests to come in their favorite pirate costumes. For the guys, a Jack Sparrow costume would be absolutely perfect. Girls can dress up as damsels in distress or as swashbuckling captains of the high seas! Decorate your home with fake pearls, and make sure each guest gets a pirate’s hat as a souvenir.

4. Barbie Haven

Almost every little girl around the world adores Barbie dolls. Dress up your precious little girl in a cute and girly Barbie outfit. Remember to keep the party casual. In decorating the house, use Barbie color schemes like sky blue and bright pink for the balloons and the streamers. Encourage your guests to come as little Barbies and Kens. You can even dye the cake’s icing a bright pink so that the food works with the theme, too.

5. An Out of this World Experience

A space-themed children’s birthday party would be perfect for your little astronaut. Decorate your home with paper stars and planets. You can ask the children to dress up like aliens or as their favorite Star Trek or Star Wars characters. Encourage futuristic attire for the “astronauts” and give out a special gift or award for the “best-dressed alien of the night.” A cake can easily be decorated with dark frosting and bright stars and round planets, too.

6. Fun Luau

You don’t need to head to the beach for this luau! A poolside luau is an excellent way to celebrate your precious daughter’s birthday. Simply ask the female guests to wear their bathing suits with Hawaiian grass skirts over them, and the little boys to wear their best beach attire. Serve delicious seafood to your guests and bring out beach balls for a truly fun time under the sun. Hand out leis to complete the children’s luau costumes.

7. Under the Sea Adventure

What’s more fun than little mermaids and young mermen walking around the house? Fill your home with blue, green and white balloons to achieve the full “Under the Sea” effect. You can decorate the party tables with paper cut into starfish and fish. Create a throne for the birthday boy or girl and decorate it with blue crepe paper. Prepare to hand out crowns and tridents to the Queen Mermaid and the King Merman of the party. Bubble-blowing kits are a perfect loot bag addition.

8. Cowboy and Cowgirl Party

For your little cowboy or cowgirl, the cowboy themed birthday party is a fabulous way to celebrate your child’s big day. Don’t forget to provide your guests with cowboy hats! Specify in the party invites that all guests are required to wear their best cowboy or cowgirl attire. Hold the party outdoors and serve some good old hamburgers, barbeque and coleslaw. You can even play pin-the-tail on the horse instead of the usual donkey to keep with the theme. Add in some country music and throw in some hired party cowboys for a truly fun cowboy birthday bash!

9. Gaming Fun

Instead of holding your child’s party outdoors, why not include indoor games for the boys and girls? All you need to do is set up various “gaming stations” with a number of board games. Scrabble and Snakes & Ladders may not be a hit with everyone, but a game of Cluedo, Dungeons & Dragons or Monopoly should do the trick with many of the kids. If you have a big television set, then having video game consoles and PlayStation games would be a superb way of encouraging friendly competition between the children.

10. The Treasure Hunter’s Expedition

For the curious and courageous child who enjoys adventures lurking in every corner and trying to find precious golds and riches, the treasure hunter-themed party is a guaranteed hit! Encourage your child’s sense of adventure and mystery-solving skills with a witty treasure hunt. Provide treasure maps for all the guests or come up with a list of clues that would help the children solve a tricky mystery. Lead them around the house by scattering clues all over your home—under the mattress, inside the cabinet or taped underneath chairs. Once they reach the final stop, the “best treasure hunter” wins a special prize—a treasure chest filled with chocolate gold coins!

Whether you use one of these themes or one of your own, your child is bound to have a great birthday party when you stick with a theme that is related to their interests. Have fun!
